PUBLIC SAFETY PRIORITY #1
Activating public spaces. Public spaces in communities are available for the enjoyment of all community members. Ensuring that parks, gardens, and vacant lots are clean and accessible plays a major role in the overall safety of the community.
PUBLIC SAFETY PRIORITY #2
Engaging at risk/hard to reach populations. Every resident, regardless of age, gender, race, or background, should be included in conversations about what public safety for the district looks like and ways to achieve it.
PUBLIC SAFETY PRIORITY #3
Expanding access to resources/services. Public safety is not solely defined by crime statistics. On a much broader level, public safety includes community members gaining access to the services and resources they need to thrive.
PUBLIC SAFETY PRIORITY #4
Consistent and impactful engagement with CPD. Public safety outcomes can not happen with out partnership and communication by all stakeholders in the district. It is important that engagement between the community and the 10th district is meaningful in order to truly work together to have a safer district.
SUMMER HIGHLIGHTS
This month, there were at least 4 major community events that included outdoors in activities such as: bike riding, gardening, dancing, art, resource awareness/access, and food. Hundreds of residents across the district attended these events that were planned and coordinated with a focus on the public safety priorities. Community members who may not have been aware of local resources were engaged through food, giveaways, and activities. Through this engagement residents were connected to local services. In addition, these strategies created opportunities for the Community Ambassador Coalition and community members to meet and engage with their District Coordination Officers (DCOs).
MEET YOUR NEIGHBOR: MS. PRINCESS SHAW
Ms. Princess Shaw is a lifelong resident of the North Lawndale community, growing up in this community made me want to raise my own family here as well.
As both a resident and community leader, Ms. Shaw appreciates the relationship she has with the district commander. She is happy about how he engages with and is responsive to community residents regardless of who they are.
Ms. Shaw is hopeful that one day the two neighborhoods that comprise the 10th district of the Chicago Police Department will work together as one community. She works to help bridge the gap as much as possible.
